Forever Australia’s REAL King of Radio. He taught me so much during the time I was fortunate to be one of his (many) co-drivers.
Regardless of what stage of his career you worked with ‘Lawsie’, even in his later years you could truly hear just why he was so damn good. He wrote the book of Australian radio.
My best memory is when he didn’t have the live read script for a Peter’s of Kensington ad. John ad-libbed the entire script during a networked ad break, nailing all the elements about the Waterford Wedgwood items, remembered all the details of Peter’s location – and what was most remarkable, is he nailed it (naturally) in 30s flat… making timeout for the network ad break a breeze.
Oh, and thank you Lawsie for that time you shouted my Princess and I a glass of champagne each & let us sit in your usual spot at Otto. An extremely thoughtful mentor as well.
He inspired many – both in radio & beyond. There will forever only ever be ONE John Laws.
